On Tuesday, July 12, the Gladwin Rural Urban Fire Department was dispatched to 4353 Bay Drive, in Sage Township for a structure fire. The owner was alerted by neighbors that their carport was on fire prior to a 911 call.

The carport was heavily involved and had just started to extend to the home when firefighters arrived. The carport was located only a few yards away from the owner’s residence. The carport and it’s contents were considered a total loss as a result. The residence sustained some damage, although was ultimately saved by the responding firefighters.

According to Assistant Fire Chief Greg Alward, the cause of the fire is being treated as accidental and appears to have to have started in the carport.  The cause and origin is being handled by the Michigan State Police as there is no insurance on the building or contents.

Upon discovery, neighbors extended hoses from their homes which helped keep the fire extension from becoming more extreme. There were no injuries reported and automatic mutual aid alerted Beaverton to respond. Firefighters were on scene for roughly two hours.
